There have been many instances in the many work places I have worked over the years where I have found myself needing to take a pause in a very difficult experience or conversation. Sometimes the pause has also required me to move away from the physical space the difficult experience is happening in . Maybe I will move to the coffee break room, go for a walk around the work building or just sit in my car.
When we find ourselves constantly engaging with our thoughts, words and actions from the moment we woke up this morning – it can sometimes feel like we have no space to breathe. The thoughts just keep on coming, the body tenses and it can sometimes feel difficult to breathe let alone stop.
But when you are really with what is happening, the tiredness, the aggression, the pain – what you are doing is liberating yourself. You are giving yourself , your essence – the opportunity to be satisfied with the misery of the moment. And why would you like to do that?
Be with misery. Because we think having what we want will provide happiness but in many ways this is just delusion. If you are dedicated to change and evolve within yourself from difficult moments or conversations in your work day and feel peace and stillness with it. In my experience, the best way to start working with these experiences is just to be still. And allow yourself to feel the pain of the moment of suffering and allow it to release from your body so you can be still again. In that next moment of being still you are giving permission to your body and mind to know when to be still instead of running with the pain and fear.
