I often get asked by friends and colleagues. Why do you spend 10 days every year going for a silent retreat? Why waste your time? After starting my career in HR I found myself exhausted mentally and physically a few years into my international career. We know this condition to be called burnout these days. For me, a silent retreat is an experience to seek peaceful bliss. I start the first couple of days carrying the emotional baggage of the year. I inhabit the world of misery…having thoughts on how I can do this? Am I wasting my time? Should I even be here?

But a few days in I meet my consciousness. I start greeting my self-awareness; and i feel I am saying hello to a good friend. The stillness and beautiful settings of the evergreen trees helps me declutter the useless thinking and I start to soften and find a deep peaceful presence within myself. I connect only with my body and the sensation of the breath within my body. I lose the superficial relationship with myself that in the outside world is based on judgements and comparisons I create based  on people and things on social media or i find myself in contact with. I lose the unconscious me where I am constantly taken over by my thoughts. I feel better. And i start listening to one of my favorite spiritual leaders Byrone Katie who keeps asking me in my mind when I feel anxious by a thought : “ Is this true?”

I start to find equanimity with myself and the environment about me. And I find an intensity to just want to be present with our great planet and enjoy the beauty around me. I no longer generate suffering for myself and start to appreciate the silence of being.
